The very act of movement from Kenya to the US is a paradigm shift for any person and/or family. Significantly lacking in the new found environment is the rich traditional African heritage that upholds the place of community over and above the individualized kind of lifestyle characterized in the West; and the disintegration of the extended family unit. That sense of community cohesion rhymes quite well with the biblical teachings of being one’s brother’s keeper, loving one’s neighbor; and exemplifies Jesus’ cardinal teaching of LOVE as being the summation of the commandments.
